Rules of the Challenge
The Yellow Woods Challenge (‘YWC’) aims to:
· recycle old Yellow Pages directories and save landfill
· educate schoolchildren about the environment
· support the Woodland Trust’s ‘Tree For All’ campaign.
YWC has been developed in accordance with the ‘Commercial activities in schools – Best practice principles’. http://www.edcoms.com/images_main/ISBA_CA_Schools_principles.pdf
1. Promoter. YWC is run and promoted by Yell – the publisher of Yellow Pages directories (Registered office: Yell Limited, Queens Walk, Oxford Road, Reading, Berkshire, RG1 7PT. Registered company number: 4205228) working with the Woodland Trust and local authorities. Local authorities appoint a local Challenge organiser (‘Organiser’) to coordinate activity and promote the Challenge locally.
2. Participation. Up to a maximum of 110 local authorities across the UK will run the YWC08, with at least 2,200 schools expected to participate. A minimum of 15 schools* must sign up with a participating local authority before the YWC will run in that area. Registered nurseries and secondary schools/colleges may also take part.
*At Yell’s discretion, local authorities with fewer than 15 schools will be eligible for YWC by securing the commitment of at least 40% of the total number of schools within their council area. Yell’s decision is final.
3. Dates. YWC08 runs nationally from 01.09.07 – 24.10.08, all dates inclusive. Locally, YWC runs in line with delivery of new editions of Yellow Pages directories. Local start/close dates will be set and communicated by the Organiser.
4. Recycling methods. The Organiser will instruct as to whether children are to recycle whole, old Yellow Pages directories (including their front covers) at school, or recycle the bulk of the old directories via the home kerbside recycling scheme and bring the old front covers only to school. In either case, children must only collect old directories/covers from people they know with a parent’s/guardian’s permission.
5. Directories. Only old editions of local Yellow Pages directories (as proven by the old front cover) must be collected and recycled. Please note that Yellow Pages directories/covers with current cover dates, non Yellow Pages directories/covers and bulk quantities from outside the area will not be accepted.
6. Results. The Organiser is responsible for keeping records of schools and pupil numbers; organising and communicating the YWC locally, and providing Yell with the local results. Yell accepts this information as final and no correspondence will be entered into.
7. Teacher’s Toolkit. Each participating school receives one free ‘YWC08 Teacher’s Toolkit’ with teacher’s notes, pupil stickers, posters and wallcharts to promote Yellow Pages directory recycling and to help teach children about the environment. A maximum of 3,500 printed copies are available. Electronic copies are available from www.yellow-woods.co.uk.
8. Curriculum-linked educational activities are on the reverse of posters in the ‘Teacher’s Toolkit 08’ and on www.yellow-woods.co.uk. Participation in the directory recycling competition is not dependent upon completion of any teaching activities.
9. A Welsh translation of the Teacher’s Notes and educational activities is available to download from www.yellow-woods.co.uk.
10. Cash prizes are awarded to schools that recycle the highest number of old Yellow Pages directories/covers PER PUPIL (based on the number of pupils declared at the start of a Challenge) in accordance with these rules. Locally, Yell will award a top prize of £300 plus runners-up prizes of £200 and £100. The ‘per pupil’ score is calculated to two decimal points. In the event of a tie break, Yell will divide the above prizes between the schools e.g. if two schools tie in first place, they receive £250 each (i.e. £300 1st prize + £200 2nd prize divided by 2). The next school is the 3rd prize winner. If more than two schools tie, £700 is divided by the number of schools and there are no other prizes. A tie for second place results in the division of the second and third prizes, in which case, there is no 3rd prize. If there is a tie for 3rd prize, the £100 is divided by the schools that tie.
A bonus prize of £100 (or two prizes of £50) will be awarded by Yell to the school/s which win the bonus prize category, as chosen by the Organiser from the following options:
(i) local Yellow Pages Art Competition
(ii) most old directories recycled in total
(iii) most improved school (i.e. biggest increase in the ‘per pupil’ directory recycling score compared to its score in the YWC07)
(iv) most promising newcomer
(v) outstanding achievement (as defined by the local authority)
Cheques will be issued by Yell within 30 days of the results and are not transferable.
11. Certificates. All schools that recycle old Yellow Pages directories receive a certificate recording the school’s recycling score. ‘Gold’, ‘Silver’ and ‘Bronze’ certificates for the top three; ‘Highly commended’ for 4th place; ‘Commended’ for 5th and 6th place; ‘Bonus’ for the bonus prize winner/s and a standard certificate for all other schools.
12. ‘Seeds to Trees’ kits. Yell will reward the top six performing schools (according to the per pupil scores) with a Woodland Trust ‘Seeds to Trees’ kit – containing recycled planting trays, compost and seeds to grow native trees from seed. The kits will be despatched to schools in spring 2008 or 2009 depending on timing of receipt of their results. There is no cash alternative.
13. UK Recycling Awards – automatic entry. Results of all schools’ directory/cover collections will be held by Yell to automatically determine winners in the YWC UK Finals 2008. One prize of £1,000 will be awarded to a small, medium and large school for recycling the highest number of old directories/covers per pupil in the UK, according to the following categories:
· Small school category (140 pupils or fewer)
· Medium school category (141 – 240 pupils )
· Large school category (241 pupils or more)
£1,000 will also be awarded to the Most Improved School in the UK – based on the largest increase in the directory recycling rate per pupil compared with YWC07 scores.
14. UK Merit Awards 08 require schools to submit a simple application form, found in the Teacher’s Toolkit or on www.yellow-woods.co.uk, plus supporting evidence. Closing date: 1700hrs on 3 October 2008.
Yell will award £1,000 in cash to the winner and £500 in cash to the runner-up in each of the following four categories: (i) Most Promising Newcomer (ii) Community Involvement (iii) Education in Action – i.e. linking YWC into the curriculum (iv) Creative Approach – i.e. extra curricular activity based on YWC.
Schools may enter as many Merit Awards as they wish but a school can only win one YWC08 UK Finals prize. A judging panel will decide the winners. The judges reserve the right to transfer entries to different categories and to award no prize within any category. Their decision on all prizes is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
15. The Big Yellow Pages Art Competition requires schools to submit an application form and a photograph of their artwork to Yell by 1700hrs on Friday 3 October 2008. Yell will award three prizes of £1000, £750 and £500. Refer to the attached separate ‘Rules for The Big Yellow Pages Art Competition 2008’.
16. Publicity. All winners will be expected to participate in publicity organised by Yell, its public relations agents, the Woodland Trust and/or the Organiser. Schools will be expected to confirm parental/guardian’s permission for featuring children in photographs which may be submitted to the media and used by the campaign parties in any way and in any media worldwide.
17. Press releases, articles and case studies featuring schools will be posted on www.yellow-woods.co.uk and may be included in any Yell/Woodland Trust/local authority media worldwide.
18. Photographs taken by Yell photographers or submitted to Yell by schools/Organisers may be used royalty-free in any media worldwide.
19. Charity. For every pound awarded to schools in cash prizes, Yell will give a matching pound to the Woodland Trust - Registered Charity Number 294344. The funds (up to a maximum of £89,250) will support the Trust’s ‘Tree For All’ campaign – providing ‘Seeds to Trees’ kits for schools plus tree planting in Woodland Trust woods.
20. Data about schools and individuals held on computer by Yell, its agents directly involved in the YWC, or the Woodland Trust will be used for issuing materials, monitoring results and to identify schools for possible educational research and public relations activity. All parties undertake that they have obtained where necessary, and will maintain, where necessary, in full force and effect, all registrations under the Data Protection Act l998 ('the DPA') necessary to enable it to provide the Services and will comply with all applicable provisions of the DPA.
